Chapter 4
“It’s so beautiful here,” Charlie said, looking around delightedly at the snow-covered evergreens and barren deciduous trees. “In town I forget how wonderful this place is, and I really shouldn’t.”
Niki held his boyfriend’s hand, both of them wearing mittens, and felt that simple bond imply a deeper connection, from the physical to the emotional. “Me, too. Especially during this time of year.”
Since it was just past noon the sun was still high up, shining from the clear, blue sky. It would darken soon, and it didn’t offer much warmth in addition to the light, but for now the day was bright. They were walking through the woods beyond the wooden fence that marked the perimeter of the cabins and the garden, but it was still their land. Snow crunched beneath their feet, and they had to cut a path through the thigh-high snow, so they progressed slowly, being the first ones out that deep into the forest. Every once in a while the wind rustled through the canopies, sending powdery clouds of snow flying from the branches.
“If I were gone, what would you miss about me?”
Charlie gave Niki a look somewhere between a glare and a reproach. “I know you Finns can get melancholy around the holidays and…well, all the time really, but—”
“No, no.” Niki shook his head fast to refute the allegation, though it was never far off. “I’m not trying to be a moody son of a bitch, or anything. I was just reminiscing. Like when we met, remember?”
“Back at uni, yeah.” Charlie nodded, smiling a bit as he clearly thought back. “I asked you for the time, very politely I might add, and you just grumbled in Finnish about foreign fools who can’t tell the time when the main building has clocks on every wall.”
Niki sputtered. “I did not!”
“Yeah, you kinda did,” Charlie chuckled. “Don’t tell me your memory is failing?”
Niki blushed, half embarrassed, half indignant. “There was a clock right behind you on the wall. Other than to annoy me for no reason I don’t see why you even asked…me…the time…” His voice trailed off as he replayed the scene in his head. How could I have been so stupid? Closing his eyes, he sighed, hearing Charlie laugh amiably near him.
“Oh, you finally get it now. After all these years.”
His eyes still shut, Niki nodded, ashamed. “You were hitting on me, flirting with me.” Shaking his head, infuriated, he snorted. “How could you not tell me? We’ve been together for ages. Surely a possible moment for confession must’ve come up by now.”
Charlie nudged Niki back into motion, and then he casually shrugged. “Possibly. But why would I tell you something you should have been smart enough to figure out on your own?”
“You’re being mean.”
“And you’re being a whine.”
“Am not.” Niki knew he was, though, and added a pout and a glare to that, but since Charlie had his back to Niki now, those expressions made little to no difference. “How was I to know you
